Dropboxの容量が最大5GB増える話。

Dropboxクライアントのβ版をインストールして、iPhoneやSDカードをUSB接続してDropboxに自動インポート＆アップロードする機能をテストすることで、追加容量のボーナスをもらえる。

ベータ版なので、ファイルはあらかじめバックアップ等しておく＆自己責任で。

以下、Windows 版で自分がやった手順 (OS は Windows XP Home Edition SP 3)。

  1. http://dl-web.dropbox.com/u/17/Dropbox 1.3.12.exe をダウンロードしてインストール (安定最新バージョンを起動した状態でもさくっとインストールできた)
  2. タスクトレイのDropboxアイコンにカーソルを合わせてバージョンが1.3.12になっていることを確認
  3. 1GBのSDカードに写真と動画を詰め込む
  4. SDカードをWindowsパソコンにUSB接続
  5. ダイアログが出てくるので、Dropbox の 『Import pictures and videos』を選択
  6. Dropbox Photo Importer が Importing photos and videos してくれる (タスクトレイのDropboxアイコンがカメラアイコンに変わっている。表示されるバルーンっぽいのをクリックするとインポート状況のプログレスバーが見れる)
  7. SDカードに写真と動画を詰め込んでインポートを繰り返すと、たぶん500MBずつアップロードしているタイミングで容量が500MBずつ増えていく

そしたら、こんな感じで容量が増えていった (Dropboxのログ)。

以下、情報源。

定番オンラインストレージサービスの Dropbox が、ベータ版クライアントの利用者に無料の追加容量を提供しています。目的は新機能のカメラインポート (写真とビデオの自動アップロード) をテストするため。デスクトップ版またはモバイル版のβビルドを利用して写真や動画を自動アップロードすることで、最初は500MB、それ以降はアップロードが500MBを超えるごとにさらに500MBずつ、最大で5GBまで無料で追加容量がもらえます。

たとえばこれまで追加容量を購入せず、無料のデフォルト2GBのまま使っていた場合、その2GBを使い切っていなくても、最初の自動アップロードが始まったタイミングで「2GBのうちxx%を使用中」が「2.5GBのうち～」に変わるということ。写真は新規に作成される " Camera Uploads " フォルダに入ります。

Dropbox の自動アップロードは、昨年末から導入された実験的な新機能。PCの場合はカメラや携帯電話、SDカードなど、写真・ビデオの含まれたストレージを接続したとき、新規のファイルを自動で連続アップロードします。(OSにより、最初のアップロード時に動作を選択する必要あり。たとえばWindows XP / Vista では自動再生で、実行する動作に Dropbox へアップロードを選択します)。Android版の実験ベータビルドでは、撮影した写真や動画をバックグラウンドで WiFi またはモバイルデータ経由アップロードするオプションが選択できます。

なお、ベータは当然ながらテスト目的の未完成版ソフトウェアであるため、インストール前にDropbox フォルダのバックアップが強く推奨されています。また無料の追加スペースもあくまで自己責任のベータテストに協力してもらうため。なにか問題を見つけた場合はDropboxの適切なフォーラムにフィードバックを送りましょう。

ダウンロードするファイルの情報。

500MB増量の方法はかなり簡単で、まず上記のベータ版1.3.12をインストールしてから、iPhoneやデジカメを接続して「Start Import」をクリックするだけ。（ストレージ容量が増量されたのを確認できたら、インポートした写真は削除してもかまいません。）

During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total. [Update: To clarify, you can get up to 5GB of free space with this feature, if you count the initial 500MB space for the first photo import].

  • Fix infinite restart of Dropbox when database was corrupted.
  • Fix import error on iPhone with lots and lots of photos.

1.3 Features

  • Importing of photos from cameras, phones, and SD cards.
  • Batch upload/download of files.

Notes:

  • Clients 1.3.5 and earlier had an auto-update bug. Please install this version so that your client will stay up to date!
  • The photo import feature is not available on Mac 10.4 and Linux.
  • For Android devices, it's best to use "Connect as Disk Drive". HTC Sync will not work.
  • To import from iPhone, make sure to unlock your phone and enter your passcode before importing, otherwise it will claim to find no photos.
  • If importing from your iPhone on Mac gives an import error, try hard resetting it--hold down the power and the home button for 5 seconds. This will reboot the phone; it shouldn't change your settings or delete data.
  • On Windows, this feature relies on Autoplay. Please enable Autoplay to use this feature if you have disabled it.
  • On XP and Vista, it relies on the Windows Image Acquisition Service. If this service is not started, please start the service and reinstall Dropbox to use this feature. On WIndows Server, you may have to install the Desktop Experience feature.
  • On Windows 7, newer devices that rely on Device Stage (in the Control Panel) will not show Dropbox as an import option until you select "Change Program" for the default.
  • The Galaxy Nexus takes a lot of time to connect on OS X because it likes to pretend that every image on the device is a photograph. We now estimate how long it's going to take and show you that in the progress bar but it's usually in the order of minutes. We're working to see if this can be improved.

As usual, we strongly recommend making a backup of your Dropbox before upgrading to this build as we'll need a few weeks to be certain of its stability. We will rapidly release new builds as necessary to snipe the most common issues as they arise.
