１９９９～２００１年にかけて、世界１７か国の学術機関などが連携して、１８歳以上を対象に、「ごく初期の人類は恐竜と同時代に生きていた」など科学分野の１１問について正誤を尋ねた。日本の正答率は５４％で１３位。１位スウェーデンの７３％、５位アメリカの６３％などに比べ「常識の無さ」が目立っている。
